A333 Gr 6, what is the minimum temperature without impact testing?

A333 Gr 6, what is the minimum temperature without impact testing?

thread794-379767: A333 Gr 6, what is the minimum temperature without impact testing?
To determine which curve applies to SA333-6 we have to refer to Fig. UCS-66 [Section VIII Div. 1].

Start of in Curve B since clause 2(c) states “all pipe, fittings, forgings and tubing not listed for Curves C & D below” (since SA333 Grade 6 is not explicitly listed in Curves C & D).

However under Curve C clause 3(b) states “all material listed in 2(a) and 2(c) for Curve B if produced to fine grain practice and normalized, normalized and tempered, or liquid quenched and tempered as permitted in the material specification, and not listed for Curve D below.”

So we have concluded that SA333-6 is under C but conditional to the fact that it is produced to either one of the following combinations i.e., fine grain practice and normalized or normalized and tempered or liquid quenched and tempered. Typically material test reports for SA-333 Grade 6 state that it is normalized and tempered, but confirm this from supplier.

RE: A333 Gr 6, what is the minimum temperature without impact testing?

Your approach is for use with ASME Section VIII, Div 1 and not with ASME B31.3, which was the original inquiry subject.

RE: A333 Gr 6, what is the minimum temperature without impact testing?

earthmantel, SA-333-6 is impact tested per the specification. If you are under Sec VIII, Div. 1, see UCS-66(g). I believe you can get to -55 F w/o any UCS-66(b) reductions.

Mike

The problem with sloppy work is that the supply FAR EXCEEDS the demand

RE: A333 Gr 6, what is the minimum temperature without impact testing?

So in reference to B31.3; SA-333-6 is exempted from impact testing if used as the base metal at -50F or higher; in conjunction with the fact that the material specification for SA-333-6 ask for impact testing to be performed. Would this be a correct?

RE: A333 Gr 6, what is the minimum temperature without impact testing?

Correct. ASME construction code book sections may exert more stringent testing requirements for use of materials.

RE: A333 Gr 6, what is the minimum temperature without impact testing?

Shell piping specs for low temp using A333 Gr 6 requires impact testing at the specified lower design temp for temps ranging from 0degC to -50degC.
