Distribution of Load Through a Beam on a Masonry Wall
Distribution of Load Through a Beam on a Masonry Wall
(OP)
Hi,
As part of a on-going project I have been designing a temporary roof for application in a towns subjected to volcanic ash fall. The designed roof will attached on top of existing flat roofs via the exterior masonry wall. Having modelled the roof in SAP with the applied loading conditions, I have found some rather large reaction loads that I am intending to distribute across the supporting wall. My thought process is to attach the roof onto a steel I-beam that will distribute the point reaction loads evenly to the masonry wall. The issue is how do I size the steel beam to ensure an evenly distributed stress across the masonry wall? as not to exceed its maximum compressive stress.
Thanks in advance.

RE: Distribution of Load Through a Beam on a Masonry Wall
What is the max. bearing stress and compressive stress of the masonry? Can the masonry wall take these added loads, added concentrated loads, as a total bearing wall system? What is your experience with masonry wall design? What is the masonry wall made up of, and how high is it, what other loads are on it, what is its F’m? What are the concentrated loads (your beam reactions)? Why not provide a well proportioned sketch with loads, spacings, sizes, all critical dimensions and design info., etc. etc., your intended new details, so we can understand your problem. We can’t see the details from here.

I like to debate structural engineering theory -- a lot. If I challenge you on something, know that I'm doing so because I respect your opinion enough to either change it or adopt it.
