ASCE 7-10

ASCE 7-10

(OP)
Hello,

With the load combinations in ASCE 7-10, pls. see below

1. 1.4(D+F)
2. 1.2(D+F) + 1.6L + 0.5(Lr or Sor R) + (0 or 0.9 or 1.6)bH
3. 1.2(D+F) + 1.6(Lr or Sor R) + ((0.5 or 1.0?L or 0.5W) + (0 or 0.9 or 1.6)bH
4. 1.2(D+F) + (0.5 or 1fW + (0 or 1 or 2fFa + (0.5 or 1.0?L + 0.5(Lr or Sor R) + (0 or 0.9 or 1.6)bH
5. 1.2(D+F) + E + (0.5 or 1.0?L + 0.25 + (0 or 0.9 or 1.6)bH
6. 0.90 + (0.5 or 1fW + (0 or 1 or 2fFa + (0.9 or 1.6)bH
7. 0.9(D+F) + E + (0 or 0.9 or 1.6)bH

My questions are the ff;

1.Which one is the basis(for SLS or serviceability limit state) for measuring the total horizontal deflection of a bldg..?

2.Also, with equation 1 to 7, are these all equations should be checked for the ultimate limit state(ULS) design of structural elements(columns, wall, beams, foundations etc.)?

Any ideas will be greatly appreciated.

RE: ASCE 7-10

1-check ASCE 7-10 page 580 ( commentary appendix c)
the suggested load combinations are:
D + L (CC-1a)
D + 0.5S (CC-1b)
For serviceability limit states involving creep,
settlement, or similar long-term or permanent effects,
the suggested load combination is
D + 0.5L (CC-2)

2-for ULS design check these combinations
CHECK CHAPTER 2

2.3.2 Basic Combinations
Structures, components, and foundations shall be
designed so that their design strength equals or
exceeds the effects of the factored loads in the
following combinations:
1. 1.4D
2. 1.2D + 1.6L + 0.5(Lr or S or R)
3. 1.2D + 1.6(Lr or S or R) + (L or 0.5W)
4. 1.2D + 1.0W + L + 0.5(Lr or S or R)
5. 1.2D + 1.0E + L + 0.2S
6. 0.9D + 1.0W
7. 0.9D + 1.0E
