quick release rope joining?

quick release rope joining?

(OP)
Hey there. I am looking for a piece of hardware that functions like a seatbelt buckle. It must, however, function with cordage instead of webbing. hopefully it will be cylindrical in shape. It must be "somewhat" sturdy and light weight - rated to ~200#.

I need to join two cords (1/8" spectra) under a tension. what this means is that the latch must engage without much relaxation in the line. The cords are fixed length, as is the spanned distance. I tried to use caribeaner- type joiner, but once the reciever settled onto the loop, the line was slack. or it woudl be too difficult to join in the first place.

something like this:

but intended for load holding would be sweet.

any ideas?

RE: quick release rope joining?

Ball and groove coupler modified to crimp or glue cord in place. Just a thought.

It is better to have enough ideas for some of them to be wrong, than to be always right by having no ideas at all.

RE: quick release rope joining?

Perhaps you look for sthg the like of a bike lock, where the latch catches the groove within the body of the lock under spring tension and is released by turning the key.

RE: quick release rope joining?

Spectra - a bit like steel wire rope - doesn't really stretch, so I appreciate your problem.

If you can relax on the "cylindrical" bit of the requirement, you might find that a snap shackle does the trick.

RE: quick release rope joining?

If you're able to incorporate some sort of flexible element or spring rated at your load then you have lots of choices,

Otherwise its something like this.

Also: If you get a response it's polite to respond to it.

RE: quick release rope joining?

I'm thinking about wrapping the end of the rope with something akin to that on the end of a shoelace and plugging it into a Legris coupling. Or cement cord into a short section of tubing and plug into same fitting. Strictly unwarranted.

RE: quick release rope joining?

MintJulep, knots in ropes reduce strength of rope by 50% as a rule of thumb.

RE: quick release rope joining?

Quick Release, or will something like a turnbuckle work?

RE: quick release rope joining?

1/8" Spectra is good for 1,600 pounds. OP needs 120 pounds.

RE: quick release rope joining?

Have you considered a garda hitch?

RE: quick release rope joining?

You could use something like these quick release hooks from Mcmaster, there should be minimal loosening of the wire after mating because of the location of the pivot.

RE: quick release rope joining?

So that's two votes for the snap shackle so far.

RE: quick release rope joining?

Will some kind of cleat work? Maybe with a single line?

Regards,

Mike

The problem with sloppy work is that the supply FAR EXCEEDS the demand

RE: quick release rope joining?

One simple cheap solution is just nut and bolt, if the release doesn't need to be instant. Attach the cords just slack enough to get a few easy turns for a hold, then turn the rest of the way to tighten the cords.

For example these with suitable holes ready:
Eye Nut Hanger
Machine Bolt Hanger

But yeah, not quick release...

some great answers here! thanks all!
A bit more info for the curious:
it is part of a consumer based portable folding structure, so needs to be made/unmade easily and repeatably. It may be good if the user can modify the final tension, so I really like the cleat idea. But the snap shackles are exactly what I was trying to avoid designing myself before I decided to look at the concentric cylinder avenue! I've never seen them before in reality.

thanks all!

RE: quick release rope joining?

Perhaps looking at window shade pull hardware?

RE: quick release rope joining?

Or the bolt mechanism in the M16. But do it so it doesn't jam.

RE: quick release rope joining?

Perhaps you are looking for the wrong thing. You probably need a quick adjust tensioner rather than a connector. Once you release tension, many types of connectors can work. It is the tensioning that is the important part. Things like this: https://www.google.com/search?q=fence+wire+tension...

update:
I am going with snap shackles and custom "guy line adjusters".

thanks all for your input! I am very happy with the results, and may not have gotten there without your input!

RE: quick release rope joining?

Thanks for the update! It is always interesting to hear how things work out
