New Rafter connection to existing truss

New Rafter connection to existing truss

RE: New Rafter connection to existing truss

Gravity-wise it looks possible. There would be more lateral wind force on the existing truss than what was there originally.

RE: New Rafter connection to existing truss

Assuming that the numbers work on all of the parts and pieces, sure. The new rafters look a bit long in the sketch but a deflection check will sort that out.

I like to debate structural engineering theory -- a lot. If I challenge you on something, know that I'm doing so because I respect your opinion enough to either change it or adopt it.

RE: New Rafter connection to existing truss

Yellow lines on a white background make the sketch almost impossible for me to see so I won't offer any opinion.

Why not see if you can’t get a truss manuf’er. to do the whole roof system in yellow (which no one can see in your sketch as you show it, in the color you show it) as a single truss, bearing on the new right wall, on the existing right (red) wall, and on up to the new ridge, and then sistered onto the left slope of the existing trusses a few feet. Alternatively, use two trusses; one mono truss from the existing right (red) stud wall to the new right (yellow) wall; and a second truss atop the mono truss, btwn. it, to the new ridge, and on down to the left slope of the existing truss. The new trusses would be put in right alongside of the existing trusses, so they could be attached together as needed.
