Toggling Exploded State in Drafting View
Toggling Exploded State in Drafting View
(OP)
Can someone please enlighten me on how you toggle an exploded state of the model in a drafting view?
I have the exploded state created in the master assembly model and all the views are created based on the master model, but I can't figure out how I toggle the exploded state in one particular view.
I've seen other posts that say to toggle it but no details on how (menu picks). Also I've seen posts that say you can also create a view for the particular exploded state but the details on how that works is also a bit lacking.
Using NX 9
Thank you so much!

RE: Toggling Exploded State in Drafting View
After I create the Exploded state how do I set a view to use it?
Also I read this in the help file which really confuses me. Could you please help me understand this statement?
I thought this meant I needed to create the exploded state in the master assembly model but I guess I'm not understanding this statement.
"Unlike other views, you can not display an exploded view from a master model in a non-master part. If you are using the master model method to create non-master drawings, you must create the exploded view in the Modeling application of the non-master drawing part."
Thank you for the help.

Or is it only available when you're creating the view the first time?
Thanks!

RE: Toggling Exploded State in Drafting View
For this post, I'm going to assume that we are using the master model method (the assembly has been added as a component of the drawing file). The drawing file should be the display and work part.
While working with exploded views, I suggest turning on the model view names option (Preferences -> visualization -> names/borders -> show model view names). The name of the current view will now show up in the lower left corner of the view window, something like: "Top WORK". If you use multiple view ports, the view name will show up in the bottom left corner of each. When you apply an explosion (exploded views -> choose explosion from drop down) the view text will change to something like: "Top WORK (EXPLODED)". Switch to the drafting application and start the 'base view' command; make sure the "part" chosen is the drawing part file and not the model part file, choose the view that has been exploded (in our case the Top view) and place it on the drawing. The drafting view will show the exploded top view. You cannot toggle the explosion status on the drafting view; a drafting view that was added when the model view was exploded will always show the explosion (and vice versa). You can switch back to modeling, un-explode the view, switch back to drafting and add the view again for exploded/unexploded views.
Personally, I like to create a view for exclusive use with the explosion, but this is not required. My exploded views are generally based on the trimetric view; in the modeling application switch to the trimetric view (right click in the graphics window background -> replace view -> trimetric). Now save a copy of that view: menu -> view -> operation -> save as... Give it a name that makes sense to you, something that you will later recognize as an exploded view. Create and/or apply the explosion to your new view. When you place the exploded view on the drawing, the name that you gave your new view will show up in the list of view options. Another benefit of a custom view for the explosion is that you can tweak the view angle to get better visibility into your assembly without affecting any other view.

cowski Thank you so much for the detail description on how to make this all work. I have it working now and on the drawing. Thanks so much!
