End Pile Bearing Capacity in Tension

End Pile Bearing Capacity in Tension

End Pile Bearing Capacity in Tension

(OP)
Good afternoon all,

We are currently working on a project with an existing deep foundation. The foundation is supporting a pipe rack, with no lateral support in one direction. While understanding that in a 2-pile series, one pile goes into tension while one pile goes into compression. When the pile goes into tension, do you guys take the cohesion for the end-bearing capacities for consideration?

RE: End Pile Bearing Capacity in Tension

No

RE: End Pile Bearing Capacity in Tension

No, and certainly not in conjunction with any "negative" skin friction.

RE: End Pile Bearing Capacity in Tension

For a pile in uplift, only consider the side resistance (skin friction). Any suction at the tip is usually neglected (I say usually because there are such things as suction piles, but those require a lot of other considerations).

OK, thank you guys, appreciate it. The pipe rack is about 60 ft in the air and is supported by a single column. The moment is appoximately 130 ft kips at the base and the axial force is approximately 13 kips and the piles are four feet apart and funny thing... the drawing does not show the pile diameter or even have reference to the appropriate file. They just kept adding the pipe rack. So we had to assume a 1 ft diameter pile.
