Wide Flange Column Repair

Wide Flange Column Repair

Wide Flange Column Repair

(OP)
Forklift damage to a W8x31 Column (see attached)
The column is 24ft. tall with a service load of about 32k (roof live and dead). Capacity is about 60k.
The slab around the column is undamaged.
How would you go about analyzing something like this? My steel guy says he can heat it and get it "reasonably" straight. Is it worth just welding some channels into the web?
Seems like with the damage so close to a braced point, the damage should not make much of difference.

Thanks

RE: Wide Flange Column Repair

Heat to reasonably straight, add a stiffener to each side and call it a day, if it were my project. I've seen much worse.

RE: Wide Flange Column Repair

I vote for doing nothing, for just the reasons that you're thinking. Maybe add future protection for the column. My version of the same: Link.

I like to debate structural engineering theory -- a lot. If I challenge you on something, know that I'm doing so because I respect your opinion enough to either change it or adopt it.

RE: Wide Flange Column Repair

I deal with a lot of impacts to bridge beams. That doesn't look too significant so I'd just straighten and be done.

I typically won't do an analysis unless it's warranted, but you also have to do what won't make you lose sleep at night.

Thanks for everyone's input
