How to calculate optimum amount of power for electromagnet

How to calculate optimum amount of power for electromagnet

(OP)
Hi guys,

Is there a formula for calculating the optimum amount of power for X gauge wire and X number of turns? I'm curious if there's a better method than my method of wildly guessing.

RE: How to calculate optimum amount of power for electromagnet

This is not so simple. Try, Electromagnetic Device, Roters, 1941 (best book ever written regarding electromagnet design)

On one side of the balance you have field strength, and on the other heat dissipation.
Is it air core or iron core? That matters also.
Get the book.

Iron core. I'll check out the book.

With an iron core you are also limited by saturation of the core.
Duty cycle is very important when looking at power consumption/heat dissipation.
There are other books also, but most of the good ones that I know of were published before 1950.

Maybe not :)

Try Alibris.com
I believe that this book has been reprinted.

Thanks, I'm going to be digging in so I'll look around.

Wow, thank you much!

If you buy it, let us know how good it is, seems like they just scanned an old one and print it on demand.
