Tie Beam Bracing System (Steel Structure)

Tie Beam Bracing System (Steel Structure)

Tie Beam Bracing System (Steel Structure)

I am designing a steel structure the issue is that i cannot provide the wall bracing (even portal bracing)due to some restrictions , so i am providing tie beam , column web to column web (both Fixed end support), My question is that does this tie beam will work as bracing member , however the drifting is under allowable after providing the tie beam.
please see the attachment for more clarification

Thanks in Advance

RE: Tie Beam Bracing System (Steel Structure)

The tie beam does not constitute full bracing for all columns because it does not prevent buckling, i.e. all columns could buckle simultaneously. If one column is nearer its buckling load than the rest, the tie beam will form a partial brace for that column.

RE: Tie Beam Bracing System (Steel Structure)

If you're just using your weak axis columns and tie beams as moment frames, I see no problem with your proposal.

I like to debate structural engineering theory -- a lot. If I challenge you on something, know that I'm doing so because I respect your opinion enough to either change it or adopt it.

RE: Tie Beam Bracing System (Steel Structure)

The "tie beams" will act as the horizontal member of portal frames, so if all stresses and deflections are within range, the scheme should work.

Thanks for your valuable replies!
If I use SHS Columns instead of I section, what you think I can get more resistance in both axis against drifting in this case???
However I know to design of moment connection will be difficult between I beam and SHS column.

RE: Tie Beam Bracing System (Steel Structure)

SHS to wide flange moment connections can get costly to fabricate, depending on joint demand. If you're in need of additional drift control, could you nest a wide flange, strong axis portal frame column into the web of each wind column?
