Flange face defect
Flange face defect
(OP)
Dear All,
Recently I found some scratch on several flanges for different pipe fluid services which are considered out of tolerance according to ASME PCC-1 (appendix-D). However there were some limitation on space and special tool for machining (re-facing) hence my question are as follow:
1. whether it is acceptable if just reinstated the flanged joints with proper gasket and confirmed by leak testing ? since my understanding it is not avoided by PCC-2 table 1.
2. Or it is allowed if we use adhesive bonded or wrap on the defected surface.
Looking forward your feedback.
Thank you,
Yogie

RE: Flange face defect
What fluid, what temperature, what pressure, what service conditions, what danger to you, to the public, and to the client and his customers WHEN it fails because you slopped goop between two high pressure flanges holding a lethal fluid?
Or is it holding a car wash water supply?
RE: Flange face defect
There are in several location, take one example is for amine service, operating temperature around 50degC with pressure max 3 barg. flange 14"-150#. the only concern is leaking if no remedial action have been conducted due to impractical to conduct in-situ repair.
Thanks,
Yogie

RE: Flange face defect
Yes for sure, there is no fabrication flaw.
Just curios whether one of my proposal above can be justifed or not. or whether someone has similar case with me.

RE: Flange face defect
Radial scratches are particularly hazardous, as they are a very direct leak path if the gasket cannot conform. Circumferential scratches can be okay, as the rest of the surface should still be able to provide adequate sealing.
These statements are not related to any codes, just practical experience.
