Gray Code Encoders

Gray Code Encoders

Gray Code Encoders

(OP)
A friend who builds racing engines wishes to measure cam profiles using digital encoders instead of a degee wheel and dial indicator.  We seek to identify and acquire reasonably-priced digital encoders emitting Gray codes for measuring:
1.  Angles in minimum 1 degree increments;
2.  Displacements of 0.001 inches or equivalent.

Thanks,
Bob

RE: Gray Code Encoders

I'm not sure why you want Gray code as it seems to have gone the way of the Dodo bird.  Digital micrometers are readily available which will meet your specification.  For the angular displacement you'll have to use rotary encoder (geared up to get your resolution) or convert the angular displacement to linear with a cable wrapped around a 'drum' of a know, precision radius.  From there use another digital micrometer.
