Sprinklers Around Walls Exposed Sprinklers

Sprinklers Around Walls Exposed Sprinklers

Sprinklers Around Walls Exposed Sprinklers

Question, do you still have to maintain spacing rules against walls when the walls are framed to the deck but the sheetrock stops at 2'-0" from deck.

So there is no obstructions to the sprinkler spray pattern, but walls will scattered about in a large space.

Thanks,

RE: Sprinklers Around Walls Exposed Sprinklers

Are you trying to spray over the walls?

RE: Sprinklers Around Walls Exposed Sprinklers

(OP)
The walls are studded up to the deck, but the sheetrock is only taken up to 2'-0" below the deck, essentially allowing the sprinklers to see each other room to room and have no obstructions to spray.

So my question is do I still need to space sprinklers from wall since basically the sprinklers are open above the wall?

No grid exposed system.

Hello,

Good day!

I think, you can upload a simple drawing in order to clearly address the situation.

Thanks,

RE: Sprinklers Around Walls Exposed Sprinklers

To me

If you are only trying to protect the room the heads are in, than yes space max allowed off a wall.

But also assure you have min six foot separation between any heads, including adjoining room

RE: Sprinklers Around Walls Exposed Sprinklers

Should have added,,,

If you are able to meet the vertical obstruction rules, and protect over the wall, than the spacing off the wall might also change

RE: Sprinklers Around Walls Exposed Sprinklers

It sounds like the 3X rule would apply. Standard 2X4 framing being about 3.5" would mean you would have to be 10.5" from the face of the exposed studs. 8.6.5.2.2 could possibly apply as well.

Also maintain 6 ft min. between heads as previously noted.

Ok let me kinda rewrite this again not sure if yall are following me, I have an existing system with upright sprinklers, it is all open space, they want to add walls and create rooms, but they dont want to modify the system much.

So they proposed adding some walls and rooms here and there but realized they would have to move the heads around and relocate some sprinklers. The thought was to add these walls and frame them up to the deck, BUT only sheetrock up to within 2'-0" from deck.

Therefore that would create no obstruction to the flow of the sprinkler, BUT with the sprinklers open above due to opening above in walls, do you still have to abide to spacing rules off the walls, let say a head ends up being 10'off of the wall.

Do I treat this as a vertical obstruction? Do I maintain spacing off walls either though the heads will "see" each other room to room.

Thanks again!!

RE: Sprinklers Around Walls Exposed Sprinklers

My understanding is that they would have to keep the sheetrock no closer than 18" vertically to the sprinkler. That is assuming this is all light hazard. You can look for the floor mounted partition section in NFPA 13 that would apply.

Right it will be 2'-0" down from the deck, but the existing heads will probably be overspaced from the walls, is that an issue?

RE: Sprinklers Around Walls Exposed Sprinklers

It's an issue if the walls are less than 18" down from the sprinkler deflector.

Thats what I thought, thanks.

RE: Sprinklers Around Walls Exposed Sprinklers

It will be less work for the sprinkler contractor, but you could save the owner some money if you can convince them to keep the sheetrock >18" below the deflector. If it is closer, then use the floor mounted partition table to determine spacing you need.

RE: Sprinklers Around Walls Exposed Sprinklers

Ehen

Are you the sprinkler contractor???

The vertical obstruction rule needs to be applied.

And applied in each room.

Not sure a blanket statement would be a good idea to follow.

Will quite a section tommorow

RE: Sprinklers Around Walls Exposed Sprinklers

(OP)
Yes we are.

RE: Sprinklers Around Walls Exposed Sprinklers

EHE

One section to check is 8.6.5.2.2 NFPA 13 2010 edition

suspended or floor mounted vertical obstructions, along with the rest of 13

a blanket statement would be a good idea to follow. You need to look at the complete coverage to see if it complies with 13.
