control valve trim material selection

control valve trim material selection

control valve trim material selection

(OP)
Hi all,

Can some one please help on how to choose trim material for the control valve??? the service through the valve is MP steam. Please guide on how to select the material for seat, plug/disc/ball and stem material??? and based on the Piping Spec of the line on which this valve is mounted, I can get the information that the pipe material is carbon steel and hence i am considering the same material(carbon steel) for the body and bonnet of the control valve. however, the same pipespec also says API 600 trim no 8 to be followed for the trim material,my understanding is that API 600 is followed for gate valve, is it applicable to globe valves as well???? and the trim no shown in the Pipespec is for the Piping valves can it be considered good for the control valves as well??? Please tell me what properties of the stream to be considered while considering the trim material of the valve???

Thanks!!!

RE: control valve trim material selection

I think CS is ok for the valve body but you may want some harder material for the trim, the manual valves don't have to throttle like the control valves do.
The valve vendors are expert at this, ask them to recommend the trim based on your generic datasheet.

RE: control valve trim material selection

Control valves are instruments that are sized and selected according to the process conditions. The proper trim for the application depends upon the pressure and temperature of your steam, and how much pressure drop you are taking across the valve. Need to consider minimum and maximum conditions, including upset conditions the valve may be exposed to. Consult with the valve supplier for their experience and advice.
