Required welding filler wire for X19CrMoNbVN11-1

Required welding filler wire for X19CrMoNbVN11-1

Required welding filler wire for X19CrMoNbVN11-1

(OP)
Dear All,

Can anyone help me in finding the required filler wire when welding material made of X19CrMoNbVN11-1?

Thanks.

RE: Required welding filler wire for X19CrMoNbVN11-1

You know this is a quenched and tempered, martensitic stainless steel with around 11% chromium, 0.75% molybdenum, 0.50% nickel and 0.1-0.3% vanadium, by mass. You should also know this is an air hardening steel so welding becomes tricky.

I would use an SFA 5.4 E410 stainless steel or equivalent.

RE: Required welding filler wire for X19CrMoNbVN11-1

This alloy is 0.17-0.23 C, 0.5-0.8 Mo, 0.2-0.6 Ni with Nb for stabilization.
It also has limits on N, Al, And B.
There are special 410 fillers, such as S41086, with higher Ni (reduces hardness) and Mo (to restore corrosion and creep properties). Weld fillers like E410NiMo are a place to start.
Or variation of 414 that are stabilized.
Or even some 420 variations that nave Nb in them.

You will need pre-heat and PWHT (re-temper) in order to weld this.

Does this application depend on corrosion resistance or creep strength? That might direct which alloys are the best choice.

Thank you Metengr and EdStainless!

Mr. EdStainless,

What would be the required preheat temperature, heating and cooling rate, soaking time and temperature during PWHT?

RE: Required welding filler wire for X19CrMoNbVN11-1

First, if you use the 410 NiMo you will need to cool to ambient temperature before any PWHT. I really do not like 410 NiMo because in most cases you need to ensure no retained austenite before or after PWHT, that is why I prefer straight 410 stainless steel for this application.

Preheat would be 500 deg F (260 deg C).
Your post weld heat treatment will be based on the original temper heat treatment temperature and remaining 50 deg F (10 deg ) below this temperature. Otherwise, you will soften the original strength of the X19CrMoNbVN11-1 material.

Heating and cooling rates should be less than 600 deg F/hr or 310 deg C/hr.
