Foam hose stream

Foam hose stream

Foam hose stream

I have two questions:
1)Can anyone show me an example of foam hose stream (as definede by nfpa 11)? because I cannot find any commercial product with this name.
2)Which are the foam monitor nozzle actuation types?

Please provide section of NFPA 11 reference

Ok, sorry I was trying to simplify the problem.
My problem does not relate directly with nfpa 11, but I have to following FM 7.88. I attached the chapter, highlighting in yellow the part that gives me some problem. Worth mentioning that the liquid has a flashpoint below 93° . In order to have more informations about foam hose stream and foam monitor nozzle I used the definition in NFPA 11 that in clause 3.3.26.1 defines the Foam Hose Stream, A foam stream from a handline and in clause 3.3.20.1 defines Fixed Monitor as A device that delivers a large foam stream and is mounted on a stationary support that either is elevated or is at grade.

Watching this chapters it is very difficult to understand how many foam monitors nozzle should be considered to work simultaneously and that could be a problem, since looking at some datasheet the working flow rate are more than 1500 lpm for each foam monitor nozzle.
An other thing that is not clear for me it is how usually the foam monitor are actuated, I now that each foam monitor can be actuated manually, but I don't know how the foam system can be sctuated.

I hope that this can explain...

RE: Foam hose stream

Highly suggest hire a fire protection engineer or a fire sprinkler company that has delt with tank protection before,,, to help with the design

RE: Foam hose stream

francescociani88,

1) A "stream" is a continuous flow of liquid, air or gas. So the foam hose stream is the jet of foam mixture (water + foam concentrate) coming out of the foam hose equipment. There is no commercial product.

2) ● You should determine the type of foam system you intend to use (fixed, semi-fixed, mobile and portable) and determine the size of foam tank/cylinders needed to protect your hazard area. You also need to know the minimum discharge time required. This will give you an estimate on how many nozzles or hoses you need. Refer to Chapters 5 and 6 in NFPA 11 (2010 Edition) for more details.

● Refer to section 4.9 in NFPA 11 (2010 Edition) to see the different methods of actuation for foam systems.

Hope this helps.

FPE 22,
First of all, thanks for your answer.
Ok for the point 1. Concerning the point 2, I already did all these design steps. I asked about the actuation because it seemed to that there was to much freedom in the choice :)
BTW, in the estimation of the foam monitors that I need does not affect the obstruction?
