Re-entrant Corners and Singularity errors

Re-entrant Corners and Singularity errors

(OP)
I having difficulty getting my head around the idea or the effect of singularity errors on the FEA model stress results.

I been running tests on a strut under tension with a square hole at the centre, trying to keep it simple, to observe the effects of the error at different mesh sizes and see if I could just get a feel for how the stress grows organically from the singularity.

The highest stresses manifest on inside the face of the hole parallel with the direction of the tensile load and read maximum at the inside corners as expected but I'm really struggling to understand what magnitude of the distribution of stress from the singularity into the surrounding elements can be safely written off.

Can anyone help explain, or recommend some reading that might help my understand the nature of the beast?

Thanks
