ANSYS Mechanical - Higher order elements with mixed-up formulation and an incompressible material
(OP)
When using higher order elements with an incompressible material Mechanical defaults to using displacement-pressure formulation with Uniform Reduced Integration(URI) and not Full Integration(FI). I was under the impression that the displacement-pressure formulation alone resolves volumetric locking issues. The documentation says that URI helps prevent volumetric locking but can cause hourglassing if there are not at least two layers of elements in each direction. While it says that FI does not cause hourglassing, but can cause volumetric locking and is primarily for purely linear analysis or when there is only one layer of elements in each direction. This makes sense when using the pure displacement formulation but I do not know if this applies to mixed formulation.
Can anyone clear this ambiguity up?
Thanks in advance.
