Fit up and Gap Spacing

Fit up and Gap Spacing

Fit up and Gap Spacing

(OP)
Is there any where in any Procedure that states you have to use a certain gap spacing/ root spacing per pipe schedule. Ex if I have a 3'' s40 pipe what tells me that I should gap space it at 1\16'' or can I just space it at what I fell confrontable in doing.

RE: Fit up and Gap Spacing

Sorry i should have been more specific. Is there a code or any reference to any code that state we must use this gap spacing for this size pipe useing STAW.

RE: Fit up and Gap Spacing

Your WPS that your company chooses to use and to certify and to test its assemblies against will specify the allowable open root gap for pipe butt welds.

Standard WPS use a 1/8 root gap for open root butt welds; you'll have to work real hard to justify a different gap.
