I think your borrow pit design might be similar to a waterway design (at low water level) where sheet piles are used to retain the banks. You could investigate the USACoE EMs for design criteria. Here is EM 1110-2-2504 for Sheet Pile design.
To strengthen Sheet Piles in the taller sections, you could add soil nails along the wall. Some are simple drill-in type with a flare end/bearing plate. But just like all galvanized material they eventual corrode. Others are concrete grouted rebar that use bonding to rock and or side wall fraction to resist pullout.
