real power is provided given the load sees a voltage & current of the same frequency that has at least some components in phase.  reactive power is that power, for example in a transmission line that is 'sloshing around' but not delivering any work to your load.  uncompensated inductance is going to bring your current out of phase & you'll see reactive power rise w/o any real power...
