How to approach degradation of friction layer

How to approach degradation of friction layer

How to approach degradation of friction layer

(OP)
Hello!

I have couple of crucial questions, any help is appreciated :))

I am investigating the mechanical behavior of a joint. I have several steel plates that clamped each other with bolts, one of them should be coated with layer of aluminium which is 0,3 mm. (I used tie constraint to represent this)

With the dynamic loading procedure these plates are sliding on each other and this layer of aluminium should degrade with the motion. Firstly, how can I make it sure that there is degrading? and while degrading, can particles of the layer make influence on the interaction during the motion i.e. incresing or decreasing the friction between plates on Abaqus? or It can be considered with additional inputs to Abaqus? and I must be sure that elements do not penetrate each other.

Later on, during and after degradation of layer, probably some parts of the steel plate's surfaces will be exposed to other plates, and since it should continue sliding, how should I model interaction there? And was tie constraint correct approach in the beginning? I feel that it might result in preventing some realistic behaviors that I expect to happen.

I used all elements solid and C3D8R. Also any tips for element types and solver (Implicit/Explicit) types are appreciated.

Kind regards

RE: How to approach degradation of friction layer

You can add damage initiation and damage evolution behavior to the material of the layer. When the material is destroyed it could be taken away from the simulation and the elements below come in contact. Here you could have a different friction value.
