Simulation of ultrasonic shot peening using Abaqus

Dear, All

I am starting to simulate mechanical shot peening, and know i want to simulate ultrasonic shot peening using Abaqus but i don't know how to start, i need any help

Regards,

RE: Simulation of ultrasonic shot peening using Abaqus

Ultrasonic shot peening is similar to conventional shot peening in that it uses hard spherical balls propelled against a metal part to produce a surface layer with residual compressive stress. I'm not familiar with how Abaqus models the effects of shot peening, but I assume it requires providing inputs for the same process variables used for conventional shot peening such as shot size/material properties, incidence angle of the shot, intensity of the shot blast, surface coverage, etc. The surface geometry of the part will have a big effect on the results you will obtain from any shot peen process. Ideally, the shot blast should be directed perpendicular to the part surface for best results. Once you define the surface geometry that will be peened, you need to contact a vendor that performs the process to get an idea of the process parameters that would be used for your particular application.

Dear tbuelna

I already established shot peening model and verified the results with experimental data, but now i am starting to establish ultrasonic shot peening model, but i don't know how to applied some parameter to the shot (such as frequency, amplitude, )

do you have any tips ?

Thank you

RE: Simulation of ultrasonic shot peening using Abaqus

Doesn't your Abaqus model use shot intensity and coverage as inputs? I assume you can get whatever shot intensity and coverage you require from the ultrasonic shot peen sonotrode/chamber. What really matters is the residual stress condition produced in the part surface from the peening process. You'll have to check with one of the equipment manufacturers to obtain data comparing frequency/amplitude settings for their sonotrode/chamber to an equivalent shot intensity and coverage from a conventional process.

The results of a shot peen process can vary quite a bit. And the best way to validate your Abaqus analysis results would be to process some Almen test strips using the specific equipment, settings, and shot media.

Here's a paper that might be of help.

Good luck to you.
