777 MCM Cable Termination Ampacity Question

777 MCM Cable Termination Ampacity Question

777 MCM Cable Termination Ampacity Question

(OP)
Our contractor has said that bolting two separate cable terminal connectors on top of each other then to the transformer terminal is OK. This doesn't seem right to me since the terminal connector between the transformer terminal and the outer conductor connector get 2 times the current as it passes through it to get to the other cable.  I cannot find the manufacturer's (www.fciconnect.com) rating for their terminal connector Burndy YA-2N  (1000 MCM)(on their site.  Is there a standard ampacity for terminal connectors as a factor of the cable size for it?

Thanks!

RE: 777 MCM Cable Termination Ampacity Question

You may not find terminal-ampacity ratings, but a maximum temperature which is probably 90°C.  Sounds like the described cable could be locomotive-power type with 1924x24AWG flexible-stranding.  There are varieties of DLO cable the are listed/marked with an NEC table 310-13 type designation, like (UL) RHH/RHW.  I’d get the AHJ to buy into it before installation.  He may agree to using the NEC table 310-16 750-kcmil ampacity for building wire.  http://12.30.8.43/fci/datasheet.asp?PN=YA44L2NTCFX&FAM=509 compression lug YA44L2NTCFX

Burndy applications literature http://www.fciconnect.com//products/technical_01_01.asp
http://www.amercable.com/DLOInst.asp is a short article about installation versus THHN.

RE: 777 MCM Cable Termination Ampacity Question

Suggestion: Look for UL or CSA listings of cable terminal connectors. If you find one, there should also be a UL standard to which they were tested to. These UL standards will include various limitations of the questioned electrical equipment.

Thanks very much.  I'll post back if I find something definitive from all of your helpful info.  Happy Holidays!

RE: 777 MCM Cable Termination Ampacity Question

I know this is done. There are even terminals with greater offset to allow stacking in this manner. My preference is to put the transformer pad in the middle so you do not get the current doubling you describe. Specify pads that are finished on both sides so this can be done.
