Non certified ASME welding rods

Non certified ASME welding rods

Non certified ASME welding rods

(OP)
Hello

We started this job with AWS D1.1 weld procedures, half the job done and for some reason the customer now wants ASME PQR /WPS. The job is not a pressure vessel. Can we do a PQR /WPS with the non certified ASME welding rods and have the procedure approved for only that batch or lot number of electrodes? What would you suggest?

thanks for your time.

RE: Non certified ASME welding rods

Manufacturer's trade name is sufficient...no need to limit it to batch/lot.

So it is allowed under ASME section IX. Where in the code would I find this?
Thanks for your time.

RE: Non certified ASME welding rods

QW-404.33, which is non-essential for most processes. QW-404.12 if supplementary variables apply.

Make sure your welders have the suitable qualifications to make welds under this new WPS as their AWS D1.1 qualifications will not be relevant for ASME IX.

By the way...does 'non certified ASME rods' mean they do not appear in ASME IX QW 430?

for me non certified rods mean: no ASME approval on the box of electrodes.
Thanks for your time.

RE: Non certified ASME welding rods

ASME doesn't endorse brands of welding electrodes.

But all the welding rods that I have seen have the ASME SFA 5.1 verbiage on the box, meaning its approved to be used with ASME. If you need a C of C or a material test report, there will be one available. The box does have the AWS 5.1 approval.
Unfortunately there is no ASME SFA 5.1 approval on the welding rods that we have.
So do you think we could still do a PQR / WPS and it would be good for just the lot / batch?
What do you suggest?

Thanks for your time.

RE: Non certified ASME welding rods

As long as the electrodes are manufactured by a reputable manufacture with the AWS designations you will be fine. If you want to list the lot/batch on your PQR, that is a good practice; we do the same. I wouldn't identify as such on the WPS as it would restrict its use to that lot/batch.
