ASME Section IX welding positions

ASME Section IX welding positions

ASME Section IX welding positions

(OP)
Hello

I`m new to ASME Section IX

As I understand doing a PQR in the flat position qualifies for all position if no impacts are required. For some reason the customer wants a hardness test done, so if I do the test in the flat does it still qualify for all position or should I test in the vertical?

Thanks for your time.

RE: ASME Section IX welding positions

ASME Sec IX doesn't address hardness testing. A PQR completed in the flat position will qualify all positions (impacts excluded).

Vertical positon is used for impacts because it puts the highest heat input into the weldment, resulting in reduced toughness....but at the same time decreases hardness(carbon steel). Flat position is sufficient.
