Butt Weld Procedure/Performance Qualification-Test Piece Dimensions

Butt Weld Procedure/Performance Qualification-Test Piece Dimensions

Butt Weld Procedure/Performance Qualification-Test Piece Dimensions

(OP)
Hi everyone,

I'm trying to find a reference on ASME Sec. IX for test piece dimensions of butt weld procedure and performance qualification. On QW-463.1(a)(b) and QW-462(a),(b)I can get the length of the test pieces indirectly by adding all specimen width together but how about the width of the test piece? I think it's more clear for fillet weld test piece dimensions as seen on QW-462.4(a),(b) and (c).

RE: Butt Weld Procedure/Performance Qualification-Test Piece Dimensions

For standard testing, the minimum width of the test specimen should be the minimum length of the tension test plus a conservative 20% or so to account for sectioning and machining. "More is better".

Use the largest test specimen as practical. The test specimen vestige should be stamped (not paint marked) away from the weld with all relevant information (test ID, date, procedure/PQR, etc) marked "DO NOT DISCARD" and placed in a controlled location. This allows additional testing on the weld or plate material if the need arises. Examples include: additional impact testing for higher/lower service temperature, hardness testing, questions about the base material itself, etc.

Here the reference on ASME Sec. IX:
PQR:
QW-210 PREPARATION OF TEST COUPON
QW-211 BASE METAL
The base metals may consist of either plate, pipe, or other product forms. Qualification in plate also qualifies for pipe welding and vice versa.
The dimensions of the test coupon shall be sufficient to provide the required test specimens.

WPQ:
The same as above for PQR

you can ask LAB about this size of the coupon.
