Matching measurements of existing steel beam with Handbook beam sizes

Matching measurements of existing steel beam with Handbook beam sizes

Matching measurements of existing steel beam with Handbook beam sizes

(OP)

We measured the depth, flange width and flange thickness (using electronic digital calipers for the flange thickness} on a number of beams and then matched them up with the CISC Handbook beams. We could match them all up, except for one beam. Does anyone have a handbook that has this beam size in it? The beam was installed in a 1995 retrofit of an old building. The size on the structural drawings is W14x26.

Measurements:

14" Depth
5½" Width of bottom flange
0.433" (11 mm) Thickness of bottom flange

RE: Matching measurements of existing steel beam with Handbook beam sizes

Suspect that you might have an error in measurement, or a recording error, in the flange width (bf). The dimensions you give here are within the mill tolerances for a W14x26, save for the flange width (5.03"). It looks like your recording of the flange width may be off.

How did you recognized your measurement of W14x26, save for the flange width (5.03"). Even I want some of W15*76,for the flange width (5.05") so would can you please help me on this.

RE: Matching measurements of existing steel beam with Handbook beam sizes

I have found that some new beams don't even match up perfectly with the tables. i wonder if their rollers were getting worn?

A measurement error was of course my first thought, soI had the technician who measured the flange width, go to the site and remeasure all 3 dimensions and he got the same thing. I think we can take it that the measurements are correct.

Yes I know measurements never match perfectly with published tables, but they are not out by 1/2" (12.7 mm)

RE: Matching measurements of existing steel beam with Handbook beam sizes

That flange matches a W16x31#.

Maybe double check that the technician is not confusing 14" with 1'-4".

the only thing i can do is go there and measure it myself.

RE: Matching measurements of existing steel beam with Handbook beam sizes

Every once in a while I've run across steel beams that I could not match up with a historic or current shape. I usually just gave up and designed them as a custom section based off of the measured dimensions.

Yes. But that does not tell me what the yield strength is. I think it is probably ok, because it seems to be of larger dimensions than the beam called for on the drawings. Thanks for all the comments. Much appreciated.
