Hi Sir,

It is for knowing information FOR surface treatment of aforesaid steel .
There is Bohler W-500 hot work tool steel dies are being incorporated in rotary forging machine for hot forging operation.
These dies bear the condition thermal fatigue, impact energy and wear under hot conditions. These dies are processed through hard facing for escalation in service life while the mother dies is hardened and tempered. After this hard facing application the wear rate of dies are increased. The hard facing process is much costly.
I am keen interested in developing these through Gas Nitriding on case of dies. What is the possibility for replacing hard facing process with gas nitriding.

You might look at ion (plasma) nitride. Implanting nitrogen into the surface without forming nitrides will create compression stress in the surface which may help improve durability.

I don't see how you will be able to efficiently rework worn die surfaces that were initially gas nitrided. Gas nitride produces a very hard case, but it is also fairly shallow. Also, consider that producing a .020" thick case on your forging die surface might require 2-3 days in the heat treat furnace.

Probably better off sticking with hardface welding to rework the worn edges of your hot forging dies.
