Pipe hanger as a beam clamp

Pipe hanger as a beam clamp

Pipe hanger as a beam clamp

I was on a site today where the sprinkler piping was hung via (from pipe up) pipe hanger, ready rod, pipe hanger wrapped around structural member (top of joist). This just seems so wrong BUT of course when I brought it to the installers attention he asked to prove that it cannot be done that way. Comments?

RE: Pipe hanger as a beam clamp

A pipe hanger is for hanging pipe not for wrapping around structural members. You can point out that the pipe hanger is round for a reason - it's not just coincidence that the pipe also has a round profile. Compare that to the square profile of a joist.

Kinda like waht I said on site - pipe hanger... beam clamp.... kinda clarifies itself, no?

RE: Pipe hanger as a beam clamp

It is a listing issue. The ring is UL/FM for attachment to a pipe.
You will not find it in the code. It simply does not state "no you can't" It is kinda inferred it will be on the pipe.
Ask for listing of ring.

well that solves this issue. Never even thought of that avenue. Thanks, Matt!

RE: Pipe hanger as a beam clamp

Fasteners to structure need to be listed. 9.1.1.5. Exceptions are fasteners to concrete and wood.
