IQI for double wall single image
IQI for double wall single image
(OP)
I have a 1.5" sch 160 (7.16 mm) pipe to Flange weld joint, external re-reinforcement is 1.5 mm & inter weld protrusion is flush with ID.
Customer specification is asking to use EN 462-1 wire type IQT with 2% minimum sensitivity. However RT is to be done as per ASME sec V.
I tried X-Ray with double wall single image technique (D-2 film) but not able to see 0.2 mm wire image on weld. Can somebody suggest a technique to achieve 2" sensitivity

RE: IQI for double wall single image
Per ASME Section V, wall thickness of 7.16mm plus reinforcement of 1.5mm results in single wall thickness of 8.6mm. Per Table T-276, you need to see the #6 wire (.25mm) not the #5 wire (.20mm).
If you are still having problems, lower the KV and/or shoot for darker densities.

RE: IQI for double wall single image
Finally, place the IQI on a separate block as allowed by ASME Section V, T277-1(a).
When, due to part or weld configuration or size, it is not
practical to place the IQI(s) on the part or weld, the IQI(s)
may be placed on a separate block. Separate blocks shall
be made of the same or radiographically similar materials
(as defined in SE-1025) and may be used to facilitate IQI
positioning. There is no restriction on the separate block
thickness, provided the IQI/area-of-interest density tolerance
requirements of T-282.2 are met.
