Is the IBC the best source to learn how to build up your structural fill and dig out grade beams? The owner of the company wants this done but none of my superiors are used to engineering buildings.

RE: Site Grading and Prep

Hire someone.

Leftwow:
The IBC is generally not (does not offer) a good college/professional course in Soil Mechanics or Foundation Design. If your superiors aren’t used to, and good at, designing and engineering buildings, they probably shouldn’t be engineering foundations either. You should get some competent GeoTech help on this. Why do you need a structural fill, how deep? What existing soil materials should be removed, prior to the filling operation, to make the structural fill competent? How do place and compact and test the fill? What fill material should you use? If it is their building, and they will assume full responsibility for the final results, who cares? They saved a few bucks today. I’m not suggesting that is good Structural Engineering or a practical/wise approach to the problem, but that seems to be the way many people think these days.

RE: Site Grading and Prep

Leftwow....what does your company do? Are you general contractors, structural engineers or something else. Give us a little background and maybe we can help you a bit more.

Industrial Petrochemical Facilities, Tank foundation ring walls, foundations for vessels. I just need a source that shows some type of guidance on site preparation, and grading and forming.

If you want to study up on these related topics, then go to Link. This links to the military design guides and engineering circulars for military construction. They have a wealth of information in all of the engineering disciplines.
