ETABS Pier Section Designer

ETABS Pier Section Designer

ETABS Pier Section Designer

(OP)
Hi all,

I'm working on a retrofit for an existing concrete shear wall building where we're adding new shotcrete shear walls along the exterior of the existing building. I have my model set up where the shell properties reflect the thickness of the new and existing walls combined. For example, say I have an 8 in new shear wall connected to a 10 in existing shear wall. My shell definition would be an 18 in thick wall with adjusted stiffness modifiers to account for the difference in f'c.

Now, I want to have ETABS check my design for the piers for the new walls. I want my new walls to take the entire seismic load and so when I use the pier designer, I assign sections with the thickness of the new walls only, NOT the total thickness as I've done before. After I've assigned pier labels and assigned the pier sections I want, I run the design and see it's using the entire 18 inch thick walls instead of the section I created in section designer. Am I missing a step? How can I override ETAB's desire to use the section properties of the shell instead of what I've assigned in the pier designer itself?

Thank you all!
