Shear in a HSS web
Shear in a HSS web
(OP)
Hello everyone,
I am working to design a HSS beam that is subjected to tension load to one of it's web (attched the sketch) so there will be cable attached to the web
so need to check if the web can make it due to this load. The beam about 25' span simply supported
I believe I have to check the web (blue shaded in sketch) for shear not tension, correct ? since the load is applied to it out of the plane (as shear ) trying to pull the web out.
AISC has some checks that I need to do for the web itself; is it okay to assume the web is un-stiffned ? Is it okay to use ASIC 14th Ed. G2. for shear strength calc.? can i use kv for webs without transverse stiffeners ? or with transver stiffeneres ?
I would appricate it if I can get some tips/methods as this is the first time I am designing such a member with this type of load.
Thanks in advance

I like to debate structural engineering theory -- a lot. If I challenge you on something, know that I'm doing so because I respect your opinion enough to either change it or adopt it.
RE: Shear in a HSS web
Chapter K shows tables with some connection types and their corrsponding checks (Equations.) I will see if we can use any of those connection.
I was asked if the cable can pentrate through both walls of the HSS and connecte it there (Still trying to figure out how to connect it). looking at chapter K, such connection is not even there..
@Kootk, would you please explain what is the side wall bending analysis ( or maybe some references that I can study to understand it) also the yield line analysis. I tried to look at my steel structral design book, and I couldn't find it. Can this analysis be done with hand calculations?
Thanks again

Try this for a similar analysis: Link
Yeah, it doesn't get much coverage in text books.
You bet. Short of FEM, hand calcs / spreadsheets are probably the only way to do it. Here are some additional references:
