Sodium Hydroxide on Structural Steel

Sodium Hydroxide on Structural Steel

(OP)
Good Morning gentleman,

I am currently seeking a solution for a caustic resistant material to spray on structural steel to prevent corrosion. Is there anyone familiar with this process and/or a material recommendation?

RE: Sodium Hydroxide on Structural Steel

Chemically, the best coating to resist caustic solutions is probably rubber (natural rubber or neoprene). Rubber lining is often used for the interior of carbon steel tanks and piping used in wet scrubbers (Flue Gas Desulphurization systems) at electric generating stations. It is susceptible to physical damage. For exposed structural steel, suggest you talk to the manufacturers of industrial coatings (Sherwin-Williams, Tnemec, etc.) to get their recommendations.

Thanks Sliderule. IRstuff, I work in petrochem

RE: Sodium Hydroxide on Structural Steel

It's hard to beat a well prepared, properly-applied, high-solids epoxy coating. And it can be applied over everything - bolts, welds, etc.

RE: Sodium Hydroxide on Structural Steel

unless you have highly concentrated, hot lye, it does not generally attack iron and steel. it does attack other metals. you really need to know the concentration, temperature and exposure levels

IRstuff, I apologize if it sounded rude. However, I'm just a peon here... so I have no clue why this has never been done. We went with epoxy coating from tnemec. CVG it is 25% weight at 120 degrees F.
