Historic OWJ (welds?)

Historic OWJ (welds?)

Evaluating existing joists, which have turned out to be 24S8 (1960-ish). How did they connect the webs to the chords? It looks like they were either fused together or some sort of solder material. I have poured through Slideruleera's archives and the 80-years of SJI, but can't seem to find anything. I am probably going to beef them up anyways, but I am still curious.

RE: Historic OWJ (welds?)

FWIW, joist welds do not have to conform to AWS. I too have seen some very questionable welds on joists but if they pass the joist qualifications, you're stuck with them.

RE: Historic OWJ (welds?)

MacGruber22 - To meet SJI specs, the joists were welded, exactly how was (and continues to be) up to the manufacturer. The SJI specifications have always been performance based to allow manufacturer's flexibility in detailed design. SJI may have specified the welding electrodes to be used, but that's as far as they go. The joist in the photo resembles the "Truscon" brand.
