All,

Regarding a stressed skin rail vehicle application, what do you use as maximum spacing equations to avoid inter-rivet buckling and how are they affected by in-service stresses?

I have used for years 1.8 t sqrt(E/Fcy), based on AAR (association of American railroads), where Fcy is compressive yield stress.

I have also seen 1.16 t sqrt (E/fc) where fc is "in service" stress.

1) Are these related to edge distance? I seem to recall they should not exceed 3 * edge dist. Correct? Any references?

2) For a shop condition where stresses are approx 30% of design stresses, besides calculated shear flow, what determines maximum spacing? Clarification: Client is asking what percentage of rivets they can remove for a completely stripped vehicle prior to re-supporting vehicle and re-building it.
