Shoo Drawings checks

Shoo Drawings checks

Shoo Drawings checks

(OP)
May I ask what things on shop drawings MUST be checked by structural engineer?
Do I need to calculate the connection for the size of bolts, gusset plates, welds stated on shop drwings by the detailer?

I appreciate your guidance.

RE: Shoo Drawings checks

It depends. Generally we require calculations to be submitted, so we can see their approach to designing the connections. If those look good, maybe a spot check or two for capacity, but that's usually it. Make sure they are using the proper loads and design codes.

We pay attention to issues related to paint, generally only if we have TC connections where paint is not allowed at the connection.

Make sure detailing as shown on the contract documents are followed. If you see some dimensional issue mark it verify - we never put corrected dimensions on any shop drawing we review - according to our lawyer it open up our liability if something gets screwed up.

In general you want to tell them to verify / comply with contract documents if there is something wrong.

RE: Shoo Drawings checks

Typos in the title of the documents

I usually check the connections. I typically take connections into account when designing but leave the detailing to the shops. I have run into situations where the steel erector uses atypical edge distance for fabrication which have led to shorter gusset plates which reduces side wall connections to HSS... I was told by the steel guy that their software does not check the column, it assumes the column can handle to connection and all they design is the gusset... BS in my opinion but whatever.

I often take the plan and then right all my end reactions and spot check the worst connections. I check welds for anything that is special or that i spent time detailing/checking.

As EOR, you know the most critical parts and you also know that parts that are more standard. I don't trust that the standard will be correct and expect the unique to be slightly off. I have never approved a first set of steel drawings for anything that was more than 00 sheets.

My apology for the title typo.
I meant "Shop Drawings"
Thank you

RE: Shoo Drawings checks

Sorry, I am really not one for pointing out typos as my fingers cannot type. It made me click your link to know what you meant. roll1

One other thing, i try to make sure that trades get coordinated, If i have steel placed in an exact location for mechanical i write on the Shops to verify with Mech. Contractor and coordinate exact final location.. contact EOR if differnt than what is shown on CDs...

RE: Shoo Drawings checks

Typically I like to check to see if the beam sizes are correct, and if they are all accounted for. However I rarely come across any connection issues, especially related to sizes.. but what I do notice is base plates, they sometimes get the baseplates wrong even though we specify them.
