Support located on elbow to pipe spool welding

Support located on elbow to pipe spool welding

(OP)
Hi All,

I came across situation where I need to locate a vertically hanging spring support for 24" NPS pipe ,on elbow to pipe spool welding.

Pls suggest ,is it technically correct or it will have any challenges during installation.

Thanks
Kumar

RE: Support located on elbow to pipe spool welding

1. How much weight do you expect on that single threaded rod?
2. Is the movement in x-x, or y-y (looking at the plan view sketch arrows)
Or up-down (+z/-z directions)?
3. How much movement do you expect? The side of the pipe is close to the frame, but isn't touching it yet.
4. If movement is x-x, then the bolted spring hanger will have to absorb twisting motion.
5. What elevation above the floor is the mounting? If high, how will you get to the hanger for installation, and for later maintenance and inspections?
6. Has structural approved the loads (member sizes, weld sizes, and movement stresses) you have identified in #1 and #3 above?

RE: Support located on elbow to pipe spool welding

If you mean can you hang it off an elbow - can't see why not, but I would assume you are restricting movement to the z-z plane.

Can't see how you're attaching to the pipe or whether there is a weld or connection from bend to straight pipe? Might be better to attach as a file as well and then we can zoom in a bit and read some of the notes.

It's not usual to do it this way, but I can't see a reason why is not permitted.

Remember - More details = better answers
Also: If you get a response it's polite to respond to it.

Hi racookpe1978,
Thanks for quick reply.

1. How much weight do you expect on that single threaded rod? Maximum load 17290 lbs
2. Is the movement in x-x, or y-y (looking at the plan view sketch arrows) no movement , movement will be in Z direction.
Or up-down (+z/-z directions)?
3. How much movement do you expect? The side of the pipe is close to the frame, but isn't touching it yet. 0.7016 inch
4. If movement is x-x, then the bolted spring hanger will have to absorb twisting motion.
5. What elevation above the floor is the mounting? If high, how will you get to the hanger for installation, and for later maintenance and inspections? Its 10 feet from floor level ,There is an access platform on top.
6. Has structural approved the loads (member sizes, weld sizes, and movement stresses) you have identified in #1 and #3 above?
Structural team is considering load in platform design.

RE: Support located on elbow to pipe spool welding

Don't care what it is doing "now" - where is the side of the pipe at maximum - AND at minimum temperature movements?

8<) .70 inch "might" clear.

17290 pound load? So you are planning on a 2-inch diameter rod, right?
