Coupon Test Alternatives
Coupon Test Alternatives
(OP)
I'm working on a project evaluating an existing steel structure to determine if it is capable of handling increased loading due to the heavier equipment being installed on the operating deck.
The structure was originally built in 1948 and I assume they used A7 steel, we are going to ask for a coupon test, but wanted to see if there was an NDE alternative as the structure is very old and has some corrosion. I looked online for some info, but couldn't find anything. Does anyone know of an alternative to coupon testing?

RE: Coupon Test Alternatives
You'll probably need the coupon test, not only to determine what steel you're dealing with, but to also gather the carbon content and other variables to see how weldable it is.....if you're going to design a welded retrofit possibly down the road.
