P.E. Stamp
P.E. Stamp
(OP)
I heard/know that the drawings for a structure in particular location require PE stamp of that particular state or location but the PE stamp on the calculations also need to be stamped for that particular location?
For example can an Ohio license engineer use his Ohio stamp on calculation document for a project in Illinoise when the drawing for that project need stamp of Illinoise PE?
Thank you

And in my HUMBLE opinion, calculations are not products of service to be stamped anyway but that's another story: thread507-89434: Calculations: Personal Tool or Public Record

I believe plans and shop drawings (when req'd) have to sealed by a professional licensed in that specific state, except some federal work. When calcs are required, those calculations also have to sealed by the same engineer, who obviously is licensed in that state. I have seen a page that had the same engineer's seal from like 10 states all put on one page, I assume it is a standard cover sheet with all his seals and he just signs and dates them all as needed.
Also, I only provide calcs for state jobs and that is because they are required in my state.
RE: P.E. Stamp
One reason for stamping the calculations anyway is more for traceability than anything else. It's often necessary to root through old documentation to find out what the original engineer intended. Typically, there might be multiple calculations over time, as requirements or design solidified. Having a signed and dated copy of the calculations that go with a particular set of drawings would be most valuable when doing archaeology of an existing structure.
Not structural myself, but I've often had a situation with an existing product, trying to figure out why the design was the way it ended up, and not having documentation of the thought process behind the design makes it extremely difficult to figure out what the design limits were and whether it'll meet a different set of requirements.

The SE requirement can be found on the Illinois board website (probably in their engineering practice act / laws): http://www.idfpr.com/
