College Student First Internship Advice

(OP)
Hello all,

I'm in my second year as a civil engineering major and I am looking to start applying for my first internship. I know that internships are key to getting a good job out of college, but I'm not sure where the best place to start my career path would be. Im interested in environmental and structural type engineering, and plan on getting my masters after college but not before I spend some time in my field. I want a summer internship and have already looked at some options on the Army Corps of Engineers website for jobs near me (Boston, MA), but I want to have more options in case I get rejected an d Im willing to do some traveling if it means finding a really great one.

My question is, what are some good companies you might suggest to look into, are there any specific type of jobs that would be best for a first time intern, and some general advice for someone in my shoes based on your experience.

Thanks a bunch!

Rory

Find something in the field where you get your hands dirty and really need a shower at the end of the day. Avoid office work like the plague. You might not understand why I recommend this but 5 years down the road you will.

Look around for a job with a soil testing company. you will be outside all sum. And you can watch all kinds of construction. Field engineers really appreciate people that actually worked before they design something.
