may I know should a frame be designed for total earthquake load that is acting at each floor? if no, how should the total earthquake load be allocated to each frame? Thanks for responding

RE: Earthquake loads

The IBC describes how to do that.

No, not unless there's is only one frame and somehow no eccentricity in the applied seismic load.

Based on a structural analysis considering the relative stiffnesses if the frames and the diaphragms. This document explains the basics: Link.

I like to debate structural engineering theory -- a lot. If I challenge you on something, know that I'm doing so because I respect your opinion enough to either change it or adopt it.

RE: Earthquake loads

KootK, what is the actual title of that extract? Seems like a really good reference when checking numbers by hand.

Cheers

RE: Earthquake loads

I'm afraid that I don't know Trenno. It was a lucky Google that I stumbled upon while trying to help out here. It might have been lecture notes.

RE: Earthquake loads

What good are ya! No worries, I might try and back trace the URL to find it's source. Good reference though!

hi KootK, thanks for the information, apologies for my slow response as I was trying to understand ponder....it and thought might raise another questions or two.

RE: Earthquake loads

Trenno!

The document referred by KootK is part of handouts for Earthquake Engineering Course (ENGC 6336), taught by Samir Shihada, professor in structural engineering at the department of civil engineering in the Islamic University of Gaza.

Here is the Link to the download page, in case you or others are interested in downloading related documents, too.

A good structural engineer is often a blessing for others.

RE: Earthquake loads

Well thank you very much!
