Primer on Studded Joists

Primer on Studded Joists

Primer on Studded Joists

(OP)
Received an RFI asking if it is okay to have primer on joists that are to have studs. Concern is that the primer will be where the studs are shot through decking due to the joists being dipped and will interfere with stud connection. Is dipping the joists in primer acceptable?

RE: Primer on Studded Joists

Assuming you are referring to steel joist.....yes.

RE: Primer on Studded Joists

Correct

RE: Primer on Studded Joists

I suggest calling a stud manufacture to get there input. The 2010 AWS D1.1 §7.4.3 requires the base metal to be free of paint . . . to the extent necessary to obtain satisfactory welds and prevent objectionable fumes.

RE: Primer on Studded Joists

MNach stated the studs were to be "shot" to the joist, not welded. If you are welding metal studs to joists, AWS D1.3 would be the governing code document. Keep in mind that metal studs have a "coating"...galvanizing.

RE: Primer on Studded Joists

Ron,
I assumed that the questions concerns welding shear studs to open web steel joists (bar joists). AWS D1.1 includes studs welded with a gun. Also see SJI's Standard Specifications for Composite Steel Joists https://steeljoist.org/product-category/publicatio...

Quote (SJI Standard Specifications for Composite Steel Joists)

102.6 PAINT
Standard shop practice is to furnish composite joists
unpainted. Paint may potentially hinder the installation of
welded shear studs to the joist top chord.

8.1 INSTALLATION
(b) . . . All welding must comply with AWS D1.1,
Structural Welding Code - Steel, Section 7, Stud Welding.
