When you want to exclude / remove potentially explosive vapours.

Very vague question so a rather vague answer

RE: when does the pressure vessel fill with nitrogen?

Are some large fabricated vessels shipped from shop to site inerted? I've noticed some large, equipment being shipped with what looked like a few N2 cylinders strapped to the side.

RE: when does the pressure vessel fill with nitrogen?

When the pressure vessel is a nitrogen cylinder?!

Couldn't help myself- the question is so totally vague to be of absolutely no help to anyone including the OP...

RE: when does the pressure vessel fill with nitrogen?

When the contract says to... :)

The problem with sloppy work is that the supply FAR EXCEEDS the demand

When you mix it up with another job and accidentally put it in the drawing.

Air is around 78% nitrogen by volume, right? :D

RE: when does the pressure vessel fill with nitrogen?

Check the plant operating manual.

OP: So You see there is no standard or spec in Your case.

RE: when does the pressure vessel fill with nitrogen?

I think the OP might have gone to check it out in person....

To be slightly serious kangar - Nitrogen inerted vessels kill people on a yearly basis when they enter them without realising it as there is no smell or odour, just a very serious lack of oxygen.

Kangar20,

I know two other reasons when Nitrogen is used in a system:

1. I've seen thermal oil systems expansion tank with Nitogen "blanket". This is done in order to avoid oxidation of oil because of high temperatures.
2. Another example I have seen Nitrogen is used for emergency instrument air supply in case if compressors are down. Nitrogen was stored under pressure in liquid form in a tank.

Curtis
