Laying of CS pipe in Concrete

Laying of CS pipe in Concrete

Laying of CS pipe in Concrete

(OP)
Dear All,
We have laid 1" CS Sch 40 pipe for transporting engine oil at a depth of 50 cm. The pipe was wrapped with tape and was then buried. The pipe developed corrosion within a year and now we have to replace it. Now we are planning to pour concrete in the trench then lay the pipe wrapped with tape and again pour a layer of concrete above it. Is it safe to do so? If not please suggest any alternate methods for laying of this pipe. I live in Bahrain where Corrosion is a major problem.

Thanks in advance

They say the definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again while expecting different results.

Use HDPE coating.

RE: Laying of CS pipe in Concrete

Or lay it in a trench formed in the concrete, with removable steel cover plates, so you can easily lay in the next one.

Or if it's not too long, lay it inside a 2" PVC conduit so you can replace it axially.

Or AT LEAST USE A BETTER TAPE.

What was the "tape"?? This could be anything from packing tape to proper pipe tape.

Remember any coating is only as good as the surface preparation.

did the pipe corrode from the inside or outside?

If from the outside try either getting the pipe delivered with a factory applied coating - e.g. http://www.scanpipes.com/3layer-polyethylene-coati... or use some decent tape, e.g. http://denso-tape.co.uk/denso-tape-50mm-x-10m?zeni... and apply it with an overlap after cleaning the surface well.

Then it will be safer than before.

Thankyou for the feedback.@ Little Inch The pipe tape used was of brand Petro and was coated with adhesive like grease. but we had not coated this tape with polyethylene coating. The corrosion developed at the outer layer of pipe.

RE: Laying of CS pipe in Concrete

The costing looks not too bad, so it looks like the surface preparation was not good.

Wire brushing is normally worse than doing nothing - you really need to blast clean the pipe and / or paint it with a recommended primer before application. Talk to the tape supplier and read his recommended installation requirements. It might seem to be excessive, but as you've discovered - do it wrong and you need to replace the whole pipe....
