Your local DOT (Dept. of Transportation) might have some min. standards for the transport of various commodities over their highways. There might be some industry standards for various commodities, check with local trailer designer/builders or manufacturers of that particular product. The exact load values are kinda picked out of the air, based on years of experience and some bad experiences. As you can imagine, you can always find a bigger pothole, on a curve, with super elevation, at too high a speed. So, this kinda becomes a designer’s best experience and judgement, and some good luck. Other than some good engineering judgement about vertical, lateral and longitudinal amplification factors on the weight of the product for design loads, the most important things might be good clean design and detailing, and simple application of the tiedown system, so that the truckers don’t screw that up. Pretty few accidents are caused by a few percent misjudgement in allowable load, but plenty of them are caused by a missing tiedown chain at a critical location. Bridgebuster’s attachment looks like an interesting read if I only had a few days to do that reading. You should probably do that reading if you are starting from zero.
