RE: Dams Constructed Under Water

Dirving-

I think I understand your question correctly.  The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Pittsburg District has a project where we(J.A.Jones Construction Co., Charlotte, NC) are constructing a new gated dam using innovative, “in-the-wet”, float in construction techniques to achieve cost and time savings and improve quality.  Under this method, construction takes place off site; hollow concrete dam sections are then floated to the dam site and lowered onto preinstalled caissons.  In other words there is no cofferdam.

The new gated dam will consist of; four 110 foot wide tainter gate bays separated by gate piers, situated between the existing lock and a new abutment; the dam structures, one 333 feet long x 106 feet wide by 40 feet high and the other 265 feet long by 106 feet wide by 22 feet high; the structures will be transported to jobsite and submerged onto a prepared foundation.
