UG10 - ASME/ASTM

UG10 - ASME/ASTM

UG10 - ASME/ASTM

(OP)
Hi All,

Wondering if any one can help.

We are currently manufacturing to the 2013 Edition of ASME VII Div 1. We have had plate delivered for job which is marked up as ASTM 2014. Under ASME Sec II Pt A this is not an acceptable edition and is deemed not meet the requirements of the specification. However the material test report states ASME SA240 2013 and ASTM 240 2014. Is it possible to re-class this material under UG10 a(2)?

Any advice would be appreciated.

Best regards,

RE: UG10 - ASME/ASTM

It seems to me that this is an issue which would involve your shop's QA manual as well as the Code.

As to the Code, it appears that you have a batch of SA240 2013 on your hands. This is good. Now all you have to do is match the MTR to the chunks of steel on the shop floor. This is where your QA manual comes in to play: How do you track the material to ensure that a specific chunk of steel mates up to a particular piece of paper which we refer to as the MTR? If you can mate up the MTR to the steel in the shop, then the fact that somebody painted another specification (ASTM) on the steel is irrelevant.

RE: UG10 - ASME/ASTM

I agree with jte. If you have traceability on the material to a heat number on the MTR that says it meets ASME SA240 2013 you are good to go. The fact that it also meets ASTM A240 2014 should not matter.

RE: UG10 - ASME/ASTM

You are not ging full information. You say the material is stamped or marked ASTM 2014,
Is it marked or stamped with the specification?

ASTM A240 2014 is printed on the plate by the mill. But the MTR states ASME SA240 2013 in addition to this.

RE: UG10 - ASME/ASTM

Now we are talking. Your ASTM material is not recognized by ASME 2013 and unless your inspector let's you use it to the 2013 Ed. You will have to get the 2015 Edition. I'm sure it will be listed and you will be able to use it with UG10 option.

RE: UG10 - ASME/ASTM

Also. The mill is responsible to mark the plate according to the MTR, is their mistake, unless the plate was cut and you receive pcs then the supplier can come and mark or stamp it accordingly.
