Blind connection for LW concrete over composite deck

Blind connection for LW concrete over composite deck

Blind connection for LW concrete over composite deck

I have a slab that I need to connect to that is 6 1/4" thick total. I'm looking for a way to connect to it without having to core next to the bolt holes and put a large plate washer on threaded rod. I've been looking at blind bolts but they are all for steel applications with limited lengths. Even blind threaded inserts need to have the equipment right next to the other side of your hole in order to install it. If anyone has any ideas on how I could do this it would be great. The main thing is that it's a blind connection. I may end up having to just core in the end but really trying to avoid that. Thanks guys.

RE: Blind connection for LW concrete over composite deck

Do Hilti style expansion anchors and drill & epoxy anchors not give you what you need here?

I like to debate structural engineering theory -- a lot. If I challenge you on something, know that I'm doing so because I respect your opinion enough to either change it or adopt it.

No. For the posted capacities the expansion don't work and the adhesive aren't allowed.

RE: Blind connection for LW concrete over composite deck

Maybe something like a heavy duty spring wing toggle bolt? You might be left to your own devices with regard to establishing capacity however.

@jplay2519,
When you looked at available mechanical anchors, did you double-check the Hilti drop-in style internally-threaded sleeve inserts? I've used these often in the past, and they work well for modest loads in this type of application.

I did check those drop-ins. They don't have the capacity I need sadly. I found some anchors that meet my requirements but they have applied for ICC approval but don't have it yet so the peer reviewer is not accepting them. He is pitching having a bonding agent in a 1" grout under the base plate to give a minimum thickness but I don't see how that will help if the Hilti anchors don't have the required capacity. I appreciate your input guys. I'll let you know what we come up with.

We just ended up adding more Anchors at the end. Seems we could have gotten there alot quicker no? Thanks for your help guys.
